HLB Jacksons Fox
This weekend, the HLB JACKSON FOX Island Ladies Volleyball Squad travelled to St Malo to play both the local team and the Guernsey squad in a triangular tournament, as part of the final training towards the Island Games competition at the end of the month
Having sailed across on Saturday morning, the team played St Malo first, and the reigning Jersey Open Champions were always going to offer strong competition, but that was the aim of the trip, as the teams to be faced in the Island Games will be equally strong Once again the Jersey Squad were able to demonstrate how strong they are in defence, but how they have also progressed in the attack part of their game. Strong hitting proved difficult for St Malo to deal with, either finding the floor, or swiping off the block. Superb serving also reaped rewards, making life difficult for Jersey’s opponents.
Set scores:
St Malo beat Jersey 3 sets to 1: 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16
In the second match of the day Jersey faced Guernsey, fresh off the late boat, and they were keen to repeat their Inter Insular success from March. However, as always, nerves played their part at the start of the first set. Jersey found themselves 10-2 behind; but they soon realised that this wasn’t in the game plan, and they started to gradually win back points. Scores were levelled, from strong hitting and accurate serving. Guernsey seemed to crumble with the reply that Jersey mustered, and indeed when the set was sealed 25-19, they didn’t appear to have any answers.
The second set proved just as close, with Jersey’s work rate still high. Superb offence was matched by perfect defence, and although Guernsey grasped the set 25-23, it had only been a few errors that had gifted them the set.
It was all change in the third set, as Jersey dominated throughout, superlative volleyball gave the, the impressive score of 25-8! Fantastic play from all players. This was repeated in the fourth set with another fantastic game; 25-16 is a great win and one which proved that Jersey’ Ladies are certainly on good form.
Jersey beat Guernsey 3 sets to 1: 25-19, 23-25, 25-8, 25-16
The third match of the weekend, saw repeat of the Insular battle; and this time Guernsey were desperate for revenge. This won through in the end, although Jersey used this game as a way to try out different systems and pairings. Another four set match, with all of them close sets, didn’t phase Jersey who had played 12 sets of quality volleyball in 24hours.
This was a wonderful weekend and gave the HLB Jackson Fox Squad vital strong game play prior to the Island Games.

Jersey Open 2009 - Report
The Jersey Volleyball Open finished today with St Malo winning the men's and ladies and reaching the mixed final.
Jersey's men's team, HLB Jackson Fox, - who beat St Malo in last year's Open - were knocked out by them in the semi finals. Underdogs, Jersey's second-tier team, reached the other semi but lost to the UK team Dolphins. St Malo then beat Dolphins 25-18, 19-25, 15-6 in a fantatic best-of-three set final.
Several teams - including St Malo, Dolphins and Ashcombe from the UK, all brought ladies, men's and mixed teams to the tournament.
Guernsey fared better than Jersey in the ladies league, with the Sarnian team Savills reaching the semi finals where they too were knocked out by St Malo. Jersey's ladies squad, HLB Jackson Fox, came would have reached the semis but finished in fifth place after losing their last game by a single point. It was a disappointment to a team which had played well throughout the two days. In the final St Malo beat Ashcombe 25-15, 25-19.
St Malo came close to making it a clean sweep but lost the mixed league to Dolphins, who had beaten Jersey in the semis. In the final, Dolphins and St Malo were completely level after two sets but the French side lost the third 11-15.
